The Rajarata University’s fourth international symposium on biodiversity and ecosystem services will be held at the university premises on October 17 and 18. It will be funded by the United Nations Development Programme’s Biodiversity Finance Initiative (UNDP-BIOFIN).
The event will be held under the theme ‘Caring for Nature, Creating Wealth’, University Media Coordinator Professor Sena Nanayakkara said. “The symposium will focus on topics such as resource mobilisation for biodiversity conservation, valuation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, green economy and green accounting, biodiversity and culture, biodiversity and agriculture; as well as biodiversity, livelihood, and community development,” Nanayakkara added.
Prof. Piyasena Abeygunawardena, Prof. Sirimal Abeyratne, and Prof. Mette Termansen of the Copenhagen University in Denmark, will deliver keynote addresses, while Professor S.W. Kotagama, Professor D.M. Madduma Bandara and others will participate in a dialogue that would follow.
Adivasi community leader Uruwarige Wannila Aththo will also take part in the event.
