Second seed Tharani Alexander partnered by Dinethya Dharmaratne won the girls’ doubles title at the Asian 14 & Under Colombo Week I tennis tournament concluded at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts yesterday.
Tharani and Dinethya beat Tania Doloswala and her Korean partner Se Yeong Jang in easy straight sets 6/4, 6/3 in the final.
Earlier Tharani and Dinethya tamed Hasali Gajaba and Minuki Wanniarachchi 7/5, 6/2 in the semifinals while Tania and Se Yeong defeated Nelini Jayasuriya and Ruvi Rajakaruna 6/2, 6/1 in the other semifinal.
Meanwhile the boys’ singles final turned out to be a no-show victory for top seed Wenuka Kithnula Delkadure Arachchige as his opponent fourth seed Vichinthya Nilaweera conceded a walkover. Wenuka edged out Anuth Wijesinghe 6/2, 6/3 in the semis and Vichinthya had the better of his Indian rival Hrishikesh Lyer 6/4, 3/6, 6/4 in a three-setter second semifinal.
The ATF sanctioned junior event paved a good platform to many budding Sri Lankan players as Sri Lanka is hosting the three back-to-back tournaments. The Colombo Week II will commence today and will continue until Sunday at the SLTA courts.
