Principal PGS Bandara to give a hand for sports

The principal of St. Sylvester’s College P.G.S. Bandara a great follower of sports, has planned to host a sports day. St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy has produced so many elite top class sportsmen and remains as the one and only school in the country if not in the world to have produced a sportsman who was selected to represent two different countries at two different Olympic Games. That is none other than boxer Malcolm Bulner. Once again the school is back in boxing, due to the efforts of the present principal. They regained the school boxing Stubbs Shield after 10 years at the 101st Stubbs Shield Meet this year. One time they were the king makers in the Stubbs Shield inter-schools boxing meet.

Trinity ruggerites back on Monday

Trinity College ruggerites who were in New Zealand for 42 days from 11 August will return on Monday September 24. They mainly went to learn the skills. It was a six week development program hosted by the Wellington Rugby Football Union. The 22 players, on tour were aged between 15 and 18. These rugby players were based in Upper Hutt during their stay. The squad took on teams from Onslow College and Wainuiomata High School, and beat them convincingly. The program was initiated by Trinity College director of rugby Inthi Marikar, through the Old Trinitians Rugby Scrummage. It was mainly to give the players some rugby experience. Former All Blacks Rodney So’oialo, John Schwalger, Stephen Bachop and Samoan international Steven So’oialo spent time coaching the boys. They defeated a combined Onslow College team 31-7 and Waiuniomata High School under 15s by 77-24. They also played a combined Heretaunga and Upper Hutt college’s team.

OTSC AGM

The 38 year old Old Trinitians SC AGM will take place on Sep 29 at the club house. It is clubs that gives a big hand for sports and assists their members. The original idea to form the OTSC came from late A.G.G. Perera, on 6 May 1978 when he requested the then Principal to look into the possibilities of forming a club for old boys. The initial response from old boys was poor, however after many discussions at various levels Harindra Dunuwille tabled a letter from A.G.G. Perera at a committee meeting of the OBA on 3 Sept 1979 requesting the formation of a club. It was decided to place this proposal at the AGM in July 1980. and this was unanimously accepted by the house and A.G.G.Perera came in as the first president with Col. Leonard Alwis as the first secretary with 53 founder members.

Antonians well behaved rugby team

Kandy’s St. Anthony’s 2018 rugger team which was led by Dinuk Amarasinghe were awarded with the inaugural “Quadrangular Spirit of the Game- Lorenz Pereira Award” for being the best behaved team. The trophy was awarded at a ceremony held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. Although established in 1854, St. Anthony’s College Kandy first started playing rugby in 1956 and has produced some of the finest players.

Present beat past

Present boys beat old boys at their annual Dharmaraja College cricket encounter played at Lake View last Saturday. The winners were presented the Bandula Gunaratne memorial trophy. Present boys made 285 for 8 in 50 over’s and the Old Boys scored 271 runs in 47 overs.

Gladwin to tour India with TISSL

Ellis Gladwin Canagasabey the principal of Gateway College Kandy has been selected to represent the TISSL schools of silence as the only Principal to tour India in December 2018. He was Eastern University’s Head of Sports and Physical Education where he went onto serve for 11 years. He was headmaster of St. Thomas’ College Gurutalawa, and later joined Trinity College Kandy as the Vice Principal where he served from 2007 to 2014. Prior to joining Gateway, he served as the Registrar at the prestigious General Sir John Kotelawela Defence Academy Ratmalana. He is also a national champion in Javelin throw and Shot putt. His career in education and administration spans over a period of 30 years.

Vidyartha squad

Vidyartha College are blessed with a good young talented side, and are sure to do well in the inter school cricket season. They will play their first game in a few weeks time with Julian Arnolda having taken over as coach as their coach Champika Siriwardene will be leaving in a few days time. The squad is made out of players like Isuru Prabodha skipper, Kasun Karunatilake, Medunaka Wijetillake, Chaturanga Dilsha, Kavishka Tennakoon, Dumindu Ediriweera, Ishan Sangeeth, Navoda Dilshika, Theja Bandara, Aditya Bandara, Dilan Sandeepa, Chatura Madusanka, Eranga Bandara, Kumuditha Perera, Anjula Kasum and Avishka Weerasuriya,

Antonian squad

St. Anthony’s College who won eight games last season, but failed to get into division one expect to perform well in the coming season with new coach Suneth Gunatilake. The squad: Theeksha Gunasinghe (capt), Navodya Vijayakumar, Nimanka Jayatilake, Kalhara Senaratne, Thimashan Abeyakoon, Mohamed Kameel, Sasitha Hirudika, Lasitha Werelkagama, Tharindu Hewage, Dayan Pankaja, Sachin Prabath, Nipun Ashoka, Asitha Wanninayake, Gihan Ebert, Mohamed Rukshan, Gihan Achintha, Pramudith Panditharatne, Savin Weerasinghe, Dulshan Perera, Niluyksham Udayakumara, Chamika Samarasinghe and Gamya Samarasinghe.

11th Victoria golf tournament

The Victoria Golf and Country Resort will host their 11th club championship today Saturday and tomorrow Sunday at Rajawella in Digana with over 75 golfers in action. The event will tee off by 7 am. This is one of the most looked forward golfing events, but according to some of the golfers news of the tournament is limited and there are lots of golfers who like to participate but are not informed. Last year Shamal Perera won the men’s and Louise Huxtable the women’s titles.

Kandy Gateway 2nd runner-up

Gateway College Kandy boys team became second runner-up at the All Island National Schools Games Under 20 Basketball Tournament which was organized by the Department of Education and was played at the Royal College courts in Colombo. The team was made up of players like Kaushal Agalakotuwa, Shevan Jayaweera (vice-capt), Akash Kathirvel, Navindu Weerasinghe, Disura Dissanayake, Indrajitha Bandara (capt), Santhosh Kevin, Dineth Ullandupitiya, Seshith Ariyawansha, Nirosha Dharmawardhane. Coach/MIC Anuradha Wijesinghe and assistant coach Hasanthika Dharmawardhane.

Kandy products greeted

The four members of the Sri Lanka netball national team, which won the Asian championship were applauded by fans greeting their arrival in Kandy. All the players stopped to greet some of the supporters and take pictures with them. The players who were Kandy school products: Gayani Dissanayake, Gayangali Amarawansa, Thilini Wathegedera and Surareka Gamage. The other Kandy product who is a national player Ruwani Yatigammana too joined. A big hand should go to the President of the Kandy Netball Association, provincial councilor Shanthini Kongage who made everything possible in Kandy for these players.

They visited the Sri Dalada Maligawa and from there they went to the Central Ceylon Muslim Ladies Union annual sale where they were greeted by their president Zuliha Nazeer and members of the Union. From there they were taken to the Municipal Council Town Hall where they were received by the Mayor Kesara Senanayake and felicitated.

Antonian Kalhara only one from Kandy

Sri Lanka Cricket has announced a 15 member squad for the upcoming U19 Asia Cup in Bangladesh which starts from 29 September. Only one cricketer from Kandy is in the squad that is Kalhara Senaratne of St. Anthony’s College.

Dharmaraja vs Dharmapala on Monday

Dharmaraja vs Dharmapala the under 19 traditional cricket match will be played on 24 and 25 Sep at Dharmapala grounds Pannipitiya.

Sylvestrian look for a new coach

St. Sylvester’s College are in search of a suitable qualified rugby coach with experience. Anyone keen can apply to the principal, St. Sylvester’s College. Their coach of last season A. Rankothge stepped down last week after coaching them for four years.

Champika to join Maliyadeva

Champika Siriwardene a product of St. Anthony’s College will take over cricket coaching at Maliyadeva College in a few days time. He made his first-class appearance for Kandy CC in the 1992-93 season. Champika a right-handed batsman, also played for BRC. A good coach he has coached his school St. Anthony’s and Vidyartha.

Sportsman Vernon Rangala dies at 86

Vernon Rangala, the former St. Sylvester’s College and Kandy sportsmen, died on Sunday. He was 86 and his funeral took place on Tuesday at General Cemetery Mahiyawa. Vernon started his schooling at St. Joseph’s College and later at St. Sylvester’s College he played football and was a top athlete during his school days and later represented Young Stars SC at football and Kandy at athletics.

He also gave a big hand for sports and at one time was the admin secretary of Kandy SC. He worked at Peradeniya University, one time Chief Librarian of the Technical College Aruppola, TRI plantation and also was with Tea Museum at Hanthana under Dharmasiri Madugalle. He was a professional chartered librarian and was one time president of the Sri Lanka Library Association. Vernon is survived by his wife Mallika, son Krishantha and daughter Ayoni.

Nissanka Nipa funeral today

Nissanka “Nipa” Pilimataluwa, a product of Trinity College passed away on Friday morning at the age of 75. He was a ruggerite, athlete and well known senior planter. He played rugger for Trinity College, Kandy SC and Uva. Nipa was also a senior member of Old Trinitians SC. His funeral will take place at the General Cemetery Kanatte today (September 22) at 3 pm.
