NPC resolution requesting UNHRC intervention

The Northern Provincial Council (NPC) unanimously passed a Resolution on Tuesday, requesting the intervention of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to address the unsolved problems of the Tamil Speaking Persons in the North.

The resolution was presented by NPC member M.K.Sivajilingam. The resolution proposes that a special representative of the UNHRC must be appointed to “monitor the steps taken to address the problems of the war-affected Tamil speaking people in the North, the issue of missing persons, the issue of Tamil political prisoners detailed under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, the issue of military establishments in the private lands of the people”.

The resolution says that there should not be an Army presence in the North until the situation improves. It also proposes to request the UNHRC to refer Sri Lanka’s matter to the International Criminal Court (ICC). It further states that the Army officers with war crimes allegations must not be given entry visa to enter other countries.

It proposes to request the UN to hold a “common election” to fulfill the Tamil aspirations.

PC Chairman C.V.K.Sivagnanam said the copies of the Resolution would be sent to the UN Secretary General’s Office and UNHRC.
