‘GMOA to strike if demands not met’

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) would launch an island-wide strike on July 17, if the relevant authorities fail to meet the demands forwarded by the association, GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said.

Addressing a press conference held at the GMOA Headquarters in Colombo, yesterday evening, he said that a letter signed by GMOA President Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya on July 9—which contains the demands—had been sent to President Maithripala Sirisena. According to Dr. Aluthge, there were ten demands mentioned in the letter.

Not updating DAT allowance as promised, not issuing the gazette notification on the minimum standards of medical education recommended by the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC), not responding to the proposals presented by doctors in connection with amending tax policies and violating the National Wages Policy were the reasons stated by the GMOA for their decision to take trade union action.

Signing the Singapore FTA, while putting the local job market in danger, purposely delaying elections for the vacancies in the SLMC, while interrupting its functions, not solving grade promotion sissues of doctors, not granting schools for doctors’ children, intervening in appointments and transfers in the medical administrative service, overlooking the Public Service Commission as well as ignoring relevant rules and regulations, were also mentioned as reasons.
