South gale affects 8 families

Eight families and 36 persons were affected with the high wind conditions which prevailed in the Galle and Hambantota districts during the past two days.

Situation reports from the Disaster Management Centre indicated that 8 houses were fully damaged while 7 houses were damaged partially. Six people were injured.

The weather reports issued by the Meteorological Department states that the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Matara and Hambantota can be rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 70kmph while other sea areas can also be rough as the wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times. The Meteorological Department alerts the naval and fishing communities to be vigilant.

The forecast also said that strong gusty winds up to 40-50 kmph can be expected over the island, particularly in Northern, North Central, North-Western provinces and in Matale, Trincomalee, Ampara, Monaragala and Hambantota districts while several spells of showers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.
