Fined for hunting spotted deer

A poacher who pleaded guilty to hunting a rare spotted deer in the forest reserve of Bingiriyadevagiri Raja Maha Viharaya, Kurunegala was fined Rs.100,000 by Hettipola Magistrate Fathima Thihana Mahshi yesterday.

The money thus collected as fines is to be credited to the Wildlife Protection Fund, the Magistrate ordered. The offender is a resident of the Willattawa area in the Bingiriya Police area. I.M.G. Seneviratne of the Wildlife Office, Nikaweratiya, prosecuted. A police chief in Kurunegala told the Daily News that about 238 offenders who hunted wild animals were arrested during the past six months and produced before court for legal action.
