Bribery Commission files corruption case against former Mayor

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption yesterday, filed a corruption case against Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council’s former Mayor for allegedly receiving an unlawful gain or profit amounting to Rs. 225,000 from the money granted for the Nuwara Eliya Summer Festival in 2013.

When the case came up before Colombo Chief Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake, the former Mayor Mahinda Dodampegamage, was noticed to appear in Court on August 7.

The Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, filed the case against the former Mayor under Section 70 of the Bribery Act. The Bribery Commission further alleged that a sum of Rs.225,000 as payment made by a private sponsor company to the Nuwara Eliya Summer Festival, had been deposited in the account of the Mayor’s fund by the former Mayor contrary to the provisions of the Urban Councils Act.
