Dr. Lester’s Peacock medal returned to wife

The Golden Peacock honorary medal belonging to the late Dr. Lester James Peries, which was stolen from his home during his funeral and later recovered by the police, was returned to his wife Sumithra Peiris by the Police yesterday, the Police Media Spokesman said.

The medal was officially handed over to Sumithra Peries at their residence on Lester James Peries Mawatha, Colombo 5 last morning.

The medal was awarded to Dr. Lester James Peries along with the ‘Golden Peacock Award’ in 1965 for his movie Gamperaliya.

The medal had been stolen from their home during the funeral on May 2, but police had recovered it inside a private bus.

The medal was recovered by the police after the driver and conductor of the bus had notified the Kollupitiya Police Station. Investigations conducted into the incident had later led to the arrest of five suspects by the Bambalapitiya Police.

Dr. Lester James Peries had received the medal when (Gamperaliya) won the Golden Peacock Award for the best feature film at the third New Delhi film festival in 1965. This was the first time a Sinhala film had won an international award.
