Uber Sri Lanka envisages huge growth potential

Uber Sri Lanka will make more investments and also introduce several new products to the country said, General Manger South India and Sri Lanka, Christian Freese.

He said that they hope to introduce a three wheel segment, merchandise and food delivery services as well. “We are very excited about Sri Lanka and will also make more investments on increasing HR in our team in Sri Lanka as well”. He also said that they launched ‘Uber’ three years ago in Sri Lanka and today they have around 60,000 riders per month.

“Though we are not yet making profits in Sri Lanka we see a huge growth potential. When we make profit we will also pay our taxes and give back more to the country.”

He said that from today they will introduce, ‘UBER Intercity’ from Colombo to other destinations and this will be mainly targeting tourists. “We did a pilot project in this regard to Galle which was very successful.”

He said that today Uber has helped to create a new ‘motor mobility culture’ in Sri Lanka. In addition we have also created a new breed of micro entrepreneurs who work with Uber as “Drivers”.

“We will now talk with Telcos, bankers, insurance and leasing services providers enabling them to offer better offering for new car owners who want to join Uber.”

He said this is mainly to woo more drives for their new low cost product Uber Zip which would rope in Nano and other smaller cars. He said that they are also looking at introducing Uber three wheelers to the market soon.

Chief Business officer for India and Emerging Markets, Madhu Kannan said India was the first country in South Asia to launch Uber four years ago and it was followed by Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. “We may next look at Nepal.”

Commenting on Sri Lanka he said that Uber was embraced and accepted well by people in Sri Lanka.
