The Anuradhapura North Water Supply Scheme would be completed by November. The main water source for the scheme is the Mihintale Mahakanadarawa reservoir that contains 356,250 acre-feet of water.

The scheme will provide additional water to the Mahakanadawara tank from the Moragahakanda scheme the following year. The annual water volume being provided to the Mahakanadarawa reservoir is 700 million cubic metres. Presently, 4,500 hectares of paddy of paddy lands are cultivated by using water supplied from the tank.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) had offered a soft loan package valued at Rs. 11.94 billion, whereas Sri Lankan Government invested Rs. 2.596 million. A population of 115,600 living in 77 Grama Niladari divisions in the Rambewa, Medawachchiya and Mihintale Divisional Secreatariat divisions where kidney patient numbers are comparatively high, are to be benefited from the Scheme.

Initially, 25,000 water connections would be provided.

The total length of the pipeline system related to the water scheme, is 760 km. Ground water tanks possessing capacities of 3,000 cubic metres are put up at Rambewa, Pihimbiyagollewa and Medawachchiya. In addition, six water towers containing 5,000 cubic metres are emerging at Rambewa, Isinbessagala, Ethakada, Kallanchiya and Konakumbukwewa.

The water purification plant which would be erected 500 metres away from the reservoir would purify 9,900 cubic metres of water per day and later, from 2029, its capacity would be increased to 19,800 cubic metres.
