Sujatha Vidyalaya - a centre for novel education

“Our children and youth are a vital part of our future and deserve every opportunity to reach their emotional and physical potential”. Sujatha Vidyalaya Nugegoda is performing an amazing service in this respect. Sujatha Vidyalaya, the brain child of Linton Kuruppu when inaugurated, was the best ever private school in that part of Colombo, following a steady upward journey towards academic excellence. When it was at Queens Road they received a solid foundational education with a very competent knowledge in English Language – the need of the day. It heralded a beginning of English medium education after the departure of the Imperial Masters from then Ceylon.

Humble Beginnings

History of Sujatha dates back to 1965 when it was founded at No. 17, Alfred Place, Colpetty by late Linton Kuruppu, Pioneer and Architect, joined by late Clara Motwani, the first Principal both of whom devoted their lives to the task of setting up a school for Buddhist girls. His truthfulness and sincerity was well exhibited in the name, the school motto and the school song. Drawn from sacred Buddhist scripture, it is an example for his creativity. How suitable the school motto “Pagna Naranang Rathanang” for Sujatha could be seen from the countless number of Sujathians who received the light of education under its roof. How Sujathians lived up to this motto is an outcome of the contribution he has made to start with. Then the School Songfull of meaning with a sense of unity and loyalty has a great significance, serenity and sanctity when it is sung in Sujatha premises daily to this day. This was composed by Ananda Samarakone, a legend of music in Sri Lanka who is also the creator of our National Anthem. Sujatha owes its origin to the vision and philanthropy of this noble founder. Sujatha then was in several places in Colombo - Bullers Road, Queens Rd, Jaya Rd and finally he brought it under one roof establishing at Nugegoda. At this juncture, under late L. Kumaranatunga, another hardworking Principal, the school marched forward. The challenges faced by the founder was what made Sujatha unique to be carried uphill by his son, Lakshman Kuruppu who took over, an icon in the field of education.

New Era

The demise of the father meant a lifetime commitment by him culminating in a wide awakening in education renowned for its high standards opening the doors to a new era. Between Gamsabawa junction and the main school Sujatha is perfectly positioned in a safe environment and its quality branches with the one in Maharagama showcase an impressive example of a well maintained beautiful school. In his effort to create a school of distinction set in this stunning complex, Sujatha offers a brilliant lifestyle for the growing family of Sujathians. Pre school, Primary, Secondary and beyond are well zoned for the purpose. Study programme and the curriculum is the most advanced on par with modern trends in addition to the excellent facilities provided. It has the cream of intelligentsia in large numbers on her attendance roll today with a professionally qualified wide academic staff headed by a dedicated, efficient Principal. Surely Sujatha Vidyalaya must rate as the best institution in the area today. No wonder it has risen to the position of the most sought-after school in the vicinity. Prestige is indeed a fitting tribute to the present management, too numerous to be mentioned in detail.

School Birthday

Having concluded the Golden Jubilee celebrations just three years ago with much grandeur, school birthday is also an important day in the annual school calendar. The true meaning of the birthday is well reflected in the vast range of activities performed by the Sujathians of the day.

There are special programmes to commemorate the milestone in Sujatha’s history with the participation of the entire family of Sujathians. The objective is to raise awareness of the historic heritage of Sujatha Vidyalaya. History related drama and music provides entertainment displaying historic significance and what Sujatha truly means.

There are many past pupils domiciled across the globe serving in all walks of life. They are found leading the way in every field. Sujathians should recall with gratitude, the wonderful education the school offered, the fragrance of the Buddhist and other values they gained. Wherever you are, do respect, revere and salute your Alma Mater. It is your Alma Mater who made every effort to make you who and what you are today. This is a “wakeup call” to all past and present Sujathians to play their part to keep Sujatha flag flying high.
