Little England through lens

Green hills amidst the mist, colourful flower gardens, strawberry fields and little cosy English cottages create the relaxing setting of Nuwara Eliya. Often referred to as 'Little England', Nuwara Eliya is an old holiday town surrounded on all sides by high mountain ridges and lots of attractions. Therefore, many local and tourists pack up their travelling bags to retreat from the April heat of the low country and relax in this beautiful town. Daily News photographer Sarath Pieris took the winding roads up the hills to capture this scenic beauty.

Gregory Lake, Nuwara Eliya

Gregory Lake was build under the period of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873. This is the most prominent attraction in Nuwara Eliya and all the visitors come here and spent some time by the lake and relax. The place also has water sports and re-recreational activities.

Horton Plains

Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. This plateau is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region. This region was designated a national park in 1988. It is also a popular tourist destination.

Haggala Botanical Garden

Haggala Botanical Garden is situated on the Nuwara Eliya-Badulla main road, 16 km from Nuwara Eliya. The garden has a cool temperate climate because of altitude is 5,400 feet above the sea level. The garden was established in 1861, under George Henry Kendrick Thwaites as an experimental cultivation of Cinchona, a commercial crop thriving at the time. Once after the Tea replaced the Cinchona, it was turned into an experimental Tea cultivation. In 1884 it transformed to a garden. Since then many sub tropical and some temperate plants were planted in the gardens.

Royal Turf Club

The Royal Turf Club hosts horse racing at the 1875-vintage Nuwara Eliya Race Course. The most important event every year is the Governor’s Cup race, held over the April Sinhala and Tamil New Year season.
