Trap claims bear’s life

A bear caught in a trap laid by a poacher in the Maporuwa jungle at Gomarankalla, Wahalkada died on April 10. Wildlife officers could not arrive in time to save the bear due to lack of transport facilities.

The five-year-old female bear had been caught in a trap laid with cables.

The bear had subsequently died of asphyxiation in its struggle to break free, officers said.
