IP Rangajeewa, Lamahewa further remanded

Ordered to undergo psychiatric assessment

Colombo Additional Magistrate Ranga Disssanayaka yesterday ordered to further remand Inspector Neomal Rangajeewa of the Police Narcotics Bureau and Prisons Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewa until April 24. The Court also ordered the CID to submit a report on these two suspects.

The senior President’s Counsel appearing for these two remandees requested the magistrate to direct his clients to a psychiatrist since they are depressed.

The Additional Magistrate ordered to direct the suspects to a psychiatrist through a judicial medical officer.

He also ordered to submit a medical report on their mental condition to court.

The CID informed court that further investigations would be conducted on the information revealed by the witnesses.

Counsel Ruchindra Fernando who appeared on behalf of Emil Ranjan Lamahewa said that the CID had failed to obtain instructions from the Attorney General to arrest the suspects.

The Additional Magistrate observed no instruction is needed from the Attorney General to arrest a suspect always while the CID informed the court that they had produced them before court because they had sufficient evidence to arrest the suspects.

Inspector Neomal Rangajeewa of the Police Narcotics Bureau and Prison Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewa were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on March 28 in connection with the Welikada Prison riots in 2012 .

Twenty-seven inmates were killed and more than 20 other injured in deadly shooting during the Welikada Prison riot on November 9, 2012 when prisoners took control of the populated prison objecting to an unannounced search by the Special Task Force to nab hidden arms, drugs and mobile phones at the prison.
