Former Sathosa chairman further remanded

Former Lanka Sathosa Chairman Nalin Ruwanjeewa Fernando, arrested for allegedly misappropriating state funds amounting to Rs. 39 million while importing sports equipment during the last Presidential Election, was yesterday ordered to be further remanded until April 12 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate.

Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne observed that an appropriate order regarding the suspect’s bail application is to be announced on the next hearing date.

The FCID had commenced an investigation against the former Sathosa chairman and former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage in connection with the importation of 14,000 carom boards and 11,000 draught boards during the previous regime.

Last Friday, the Court of Appeal dismissed a writ petition filed by former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, who sought an order preventing the FCID from arresting him for allegedly committing offences under the Penal Code and Public Property Act while importing sports equipment.
