Cop injured in shooting near Kataragama bus stand

A police constable attached to the Tangalle Police Intelligence Unit was injured in a shooting incident yesterday. Several persons who had come in a three wheeler had shot at him near the Kataragama bus stand and fled.

The shooting took place near the Kataragama town at around 6.50 am, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said, adding that the injured constable is a 42-year-old married man.

The Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said the shooting was with regard to a personal dispute, according to preliminary investigations.

The PC had sustained injuries to his left hand and was admitted to the Debarawewa Hospital and later transferred to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

The policeman is a resident of Wallimathagama, Kataragama. He had been in the habit of travelling from his home to the bus stand every morning on his motorcycle, parking it at a nearby house and taking the bus to Tangalle. He had parked his motorcycle as usual yesterday and had been on his way to the bus stand when he was shot at.

So far, no one had been arrested in connection with the shooting. Further investigations are being carried out by the Kataragama Police and several other police teams.
