Seventy-five percent of construction work completed

Seventy-five percent of the construction work of the Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga Multi-Purpose Development Project has been completed, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister and Mahaveli Development State Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

President Maithripala Sirisena had instructed Minister Amaraweera to look into the progress of the project before he left for his official foreign tour. Minister Amaraweera hence made visited the Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga Project site and discussed the problems of the public, with officials.

It is planned to provide water to the Moragahakanda Reservoir through a 9-km long canal from the Kalu Ganga reservoir. This reservoir was constructed to provide water for more than 400 acres of farming lands and to develop the fresh water fish industry, in addition to the provision of drinking water to people in many of the surrounding districts.

Minister Amaraweera said that the estimated cost of the Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga Project, which is a concept of President Maithripala Sirisena, is USD 136 billion. He added that it is planned to provide water to 100 mini-reservoirs from the main reservoir.

The minister also said this project is a wonder among irrigation projects within the country, in the 21st century.

He added that the construction of these two reservoirs are underway with a far-sighted, timely and environmental-friendly view.
