Retired Major Neville Wanniarachchi, the ex-Chief Security Officer (CSO) of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who pleaded guilty in connection with five corruption cases filed against him by the Bribery Commission, was yesterday ordered to pay a fine of Rs.5000 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, had filed five corruption cases in the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court against Major Neville Wanniarachchi, over the non-declaration of assets and liabilities. The Bribery Commission alleged that Major Wanniarachchi had failed to declare his assets and liabilities for a period of five years since 2010 to 2014, while serving as an Army Commissioned Officer.
According to the Assets and Liabilities Law, the Court has jurisdiction to impose a fine of Rs.1000 or one year jail term for a person found guilty to the charges. Colombo Additional Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali imposed a fine of Rs. 5000 regarding the five cases and observed that the accused will have to serve a one-month-jail term in default of payment of the fine.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption had filed charges against the former Major in the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court under Section 9 of the Declaration of Assets and Liabilities Law No. 1 of 1975. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption’s Deputy Director General (Legal), Ganga Heiyanthuduwa appeared for the prosecution.
Counsel Sampath Mendis with Pasan Wanigasekara, Chameera de Silva and Nissanka Peiris appeared for the accused.
