Narrow-minded criticism by various groups led to the temporary halt of the programme to distribute tablets to Advanced Level students, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.
“We stopped giving tablets for Advanced Level students and we hope to resume the programme this year,” he said.
He made this comment at an event to hand over teaching appointment letters to 71 National Colleges of Education diploma holders at the Education Ministry auditorium yesterday.
These appointments were given according to available vacancies at national schools in the provinces. The appointments have been offered to Sinhala and Tamil medium teachers.
The minister said the school uniform material currently distributed was of good quality, but the previous government gave low-quality material for school uniforms. Reports indicate that about 30 percent of children did not receive uniforms during the previous regime.
“We also gave appointments to 4,000 principals and we expect to add IT as a compulsory subject,” the minister said.
He said the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC) manages the insurance programme ‘Suraksha Sisu Rakshanaya,’ for students between the ages of 5-19 in government schools, non-aided or aided private schools, pirivena schools and international schools.
State Education Minister V.S. Radhakrishna, Education Ministry Additional Secretaries Hemantha Premathilaka and Asoka Liyanage, Examinations Commissioner General Sanath Pujitha, Colleges of Education Commissioner K.M.H Bandara, National Colleges of Education Presidents and officers of the ministry were present at the occasion.
