Independence celebrated in Vietnam

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Ha Noi celebrated the 70th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka on February 4 with the Sri Lankan community in and around Ha Noi.

Meanwhile, the Hony. Consul for Sri Lanka in Ho Chi Minh city organized a ceremony for the community in Southern Vietnam.

The ceremony at the Embassy commenced with hoisting of the national flag of Sri Lanka and singing of the National Anthem in both Sinhala and Tamil languages which were followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, observing two minutes’ silence for those who have sacrificed their lives to safeguard independence of the country.

Invoking blessings on the country and its people, religious dignitaries representing Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity conducted religious observances. Keeping in line with the tradition, the Independence Day messages of the President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka were read in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Hasanthi Urugodawatte Dissanayake spoke on Sri Lanka’s post-independence trajectory, highlighting country's achievements and its democratic traditions.
