The 34th Mercantile Athletics Championship turned into a huge success at the Mahinda Rajapakasa Stadium, Diyagama with MAS Holdings, Sri Lanka Telecom and Sampath Bank winning the overall first, second and third places respectively.

Indumathie Karunathileka of MAS Holdings, who is a para athlete dished out a superb performance to be adjudged the Best Athlete (women’s) of the Over 30 age category by winning four gold medals with three record breaking performances.

Indumathie created three new individual meet records in women’s over 30 category 100m, 200m and 400m events and associated the gold medal victory of 100mx4 event. She won the President’s award for the Best Para Athlete in 2015 and 2016.

Indika Gamlath of Colombo Dockyard too set up three new meet records in men’s Over-40 category 100m, 200m and 400m events.

He won the gold medal of men’s 200m and clinched two silvers in 100m and 400m events at the previous South Asian Masters’ Athletics Championship in China.

Nadeera Wijethunga of MAS Holdings who established a new meet record of 1.95m in Over-30 men’s high jump event was adjudged the Best Athlete (male) while H. K. Amarawansa of HNB who created a new meet record in Over-30 women’s long jump with a performance of 4.55m was picked as the Best Athlete (female). Sri Lanka Telecom was the main sponsor while Lake House turned in as the print media sponsor for the event.
