Fidel Castro memorial event held in Colombo

Cuban Ambassador in Colombo Juana Elena Ramos Rodriguez on Wednesday said leader of the Cuban Revolution and former President of Cuba Fidel Castro always valued the friendship and diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka.

“Comrade Fidel spoke highly of your country and the open minded support that your leader’s both past and present had given to Cuba in both bad times and the good.’’ the Cuban Ambassador said.

She was speaking at an event in Colombo on Wednesday to mark the first death anniversary of iconic revolutionary leader of Cuba Fidel Castro.

“Cuba is enjoying full sovereignty and prosperity due to the many sacrifices made by our past leader Fidel Castro and with the help of his Revolution’’, She said.

“We owe everything to Castro, without him, Cuba would have never reached the potential that it enjoys today under the banners of health, education and in human developmental aspects which were part of his elaborate plan to make Cuba a developed nation”, Rodriguez said.

The Cuban Ambassador also brought forward the current diplomatic situation between the United States and Cuba, saying “Even though we share a violent and suspicious past, the United States and Cuba must put aside their differences and view each other as equals and the USA must acknowledge Cuba’s sovereignty and duly respect the bilateral relationship that Cuba is offering’.

“After Fidel came into power he set up several policies that spelled a golden age for Cuba as he gave aid to the poor, introduced several popular educational reforms and is widely known for introducing a range of world-renowned medical reforms and policies that brought Cuba to the centre stage in the theatre that is the global community”, the Cuban Ambassador said.

Fidel Castro passed away on November 25 last year.

Senior Ministers, Parliamentarians and political party leaders were present at the event.
