Prosecution expecting to prove case against Basil, three others

The Attorney General yesterday informed the Colombo High Court that the prosecution is expecting to present facts and material to prove that four accused including former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa had allegedly misappropriated Rs.2991 million of funds belonging to Divi Neguma Department while distributing roofing sheets among Divi

Neguma beneficiaries during the previous Presidential Election. Deputy Solicitor General Thusith Mudalige made these remarks while giving an introduction regarding the roofing sheet case filed against the four accused including former Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

DSG Mudalige informed High Court Judge R. Gurusinghe that the four accused former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, former Director General of Divi Neguma Department Kithsiri Ranawaka, former Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Development Dr. Nihal Jayasinghe and former Deputy Director General of Divi Neguma Department Bandula

Tilllekasiri had given their approval to provide a sum of Rs.10,000 for the repair of the houses of low income earners by utilizing the savings funds of Samurdhi beneficiaries.

He said, the Attorney General has initiated legal proceedings against four accused under Penal Code and Public Property Act for misappropriating a sum of R. 2991 million without parliament approval.

When the case came up before High Court Judge R.Gurusinghe, the first witness Nadeeka Sanjeewani, an assistant secretary to the Samurdhi Development Department gave evidence. Further trial was fixed for November 22.

The Attorney General had filed indictments against former Minister Basil Rajapaksa, former Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Development Dr. Nihal Jayasinghe, former Director General of Divi Neguma Department Kithsiri Ranawaka and former Deputy Director General of Divi Neguma Department Bandula Tilllekasiri ,in the Colombo High Court, for allegedly distributing roofing sheets costing Rs.2991 million during the January-2015 presidential election.

President’s Counsel Gamini Marapana with Jayantha Weerasinghe PC and Navin Marapana appeared for the accused.
