Scare mongering on new Constitution proposals - Minister

Lands and Parliamentary Reforms Minister Gayantha Karunathilake yesterday said certain elements are scaring people by propagating lies over the process of formulating the new constitution.

He requested these elements not to scare the people and cripple the country’s progress march.

Karunathilake was addressing a press conference at UNP headquarters, Sirikotha yesterday.

“It is not appropriate to think of retaining the powers of a political party or a person, when a new Constitution is being drafted.A Constitution is drafted for the well being of future generations”, he said

He said that parliament discussed the interim report of the Steering Committee established under the Constitutional Assembly extensively last week .

Parliamentarians representing various political parties aired their views at this debate.“Our parliament allocates only one day for a subject but we were able to discuss this report for three days”, he said.

He added that parliament allocated two more days to deliberate on this report. Gampaha District UNP Parliamentarian Ajith Mannapperuma said a new Constitution has not been drafted.

Any one in the country can make their inputs we have no intention of misleading the public over the Constitutional making process.
