Hecuba, a theatre production by University of Peradeniya, Faculty of Arts, Department of Classics will be stage on October 20 at 6pm at the E.O.E Pereira Theatre of the University of Peradeniya.

Hecuba is based on the aftermath of the legendary Trojan War which is the staple myth of classical Greek and Roman literature revolving around the conflict between the empires of Greece and Troy. The play centres around the women of Troy who are taken captive after the destruction of their city. Hecuba being their queen and the idol they all look up to find herself stuck in a difficult position where she has to protect the last of her family and her royal subjects, against the gravest odds.

The play is written and directed by Dhisal Kapuge in his debut production. The play draws inspiration from the literary works of Euripides’ Hecuba and The Trojan Women, Aeschylus’ Agamemnon and Ovid’s version of the myth of Hecuba. The play presents and empathises with, the tragic, weary but strong and determined queen Hecuba, the stubborn and passionate Polyxena, the unheeded prophetess Cassandra, the noble Andromache and other women who have undergone the agony of being widowed, raped and seeing their children being murdered.
