Sri Lanka to host four day World Pepper Summit 2017

Arrangements have been made to hold the 2017 World Pepper Summit in Kandy, Sri Lanka, from October 30 to November 2. Export Agriculture Director General Dr. M.A.P.K. Seneviratne told the Daily News that the Summit would be opened by President Maithripala Sirisena.

Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam who are permanent members would participate in the Summit, whereas Papua New Guinea and Philippine delegations would attend the summit as associate members. In addition, around 40 countries are representing the international conference, Seneviratne emphasised.

He pointed out that this was a rare opportunity to Sri Lanka for promoting the country’s export agriculture crops production and marketing. “Our pepper stands internationally foremost among the best pepper varieties containing 4% oil percentage. We would get a chance to promote our other export crops such as Clove, Arricanut, Ginger, Cocoa, Cardamom, Citronella, Nutmeg, Vanila, Turmeric, etc through the Summit process,” Seneviratne further said.

It has been planned to select the best pepper farmer, best value added products manufacturer and also to hold a national level export crops exhibition and an arts competition for school children linked to the Summit he stated further. We are planning to promote our pepper and cinnamon cultivation by two fold within three years. For achieving the objectives a ‘’Cinnamon week’’ and ‘’Pepper day’’ programmes are being scheduled to be held. Also we are promoting export crops cultivation in the North Central and the North at present, the Export Agriculture Director General further added.
