Gazette on number of LG members to be issued next week

The gazette indicating the number of members in each Local Government body will be issued next week, Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Faiszer Musthapha said.

The gazette is a pre-requisite for holding the Local Government polls under the new electoral system. Speaking to the media at the Parliamentary complex yesterday, the minister said the draft of that gazette would be handed over to the Elections Commission Chairman today.

He also noted that several Urban Councils would be elevated to the level of Municipal Councils before the upcoming elections, raising the number of Municipal Councils in the country from the existing number of 23.

He added that the composition of Ambagamuwa and Nuwara Eliya Pradeshiya Sabhas, which have a population of over 2 million, would change shortly and they would be divided into about four to five Pradeshiya Sabhas. He said this decision was taken following a request from the Tamil parties representing the estate community.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, joining in the press conference, said both the Elections Commission Chairman and Delimitation Commission Chairman, whom he contacted yesterday, assured that the LG polls could be held in January and the Provincial Council polls could be held in March.

He said the recently-passed pieces of legislation to enact a new electoral system sans preferential votes and to give more space for female representation are historical landmarks in Sri Lankan politics. “They go down in history as progressive legislation. Civil society and religious leaders campaigned for their passage for a long time now,” he said.

Minister Musthapha said the Delimitation Committee members told him that the delimitation report on Provincial Councils would be presented within three months.
