Ranjan noticed to appear before SC following Contempt action

Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake was yesterday noticed to appear before the Supreme Court on October 25 to show cause regarding two contempt of Court actions filed against him for allegedly casting insulting remarks on the reputation of the judiciary and lawyers at a press conference.

The Supreme Court Three-Judge-Bench comprising Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, Sisira de Abrew and Anil Goonaratne decided to issue notices on the Deputy Minister pursuant to two contempt of court actions filed by two individuals.

Counsel Rasika Dissanayake appearing for the complainants moved the Supreme Court that summons be issued on the respondent taking into consideration the seriousness of the statement he is alleged to have made, during a press conference.

Ven. Magalkande Sudantha Thera of the Bodu Bala Sena Organization and R.Sunil Perera,a retired Air Force Officer had made complaints to the Supreme Court seeking a contempt of court action against Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake for allegedly making an insulting remarks on the reputation of the judiciary and lawyers, at a press conference held on August 21.

Counsel Rasika Dissanayake with Sandun Senadhipathi under the instructions of Sanath Wijewardena appeared for the complainants.
