Prasanna Ranatunga surrenders to Pugoda court

Parliamentarian Prasanna Ranatunga who had an open warrant against him for failure to appear in the Pugoda Magistrate’s court on September 18 surrendered yesterday.

The case involves causing Rs. 179,058 damage to three garbage trucks transporting Colombo’s waste to the Kirindiwela garbage recycling centre and Rs. 14,500 damage caused to a STF defender jeep.

Ranatunga surrendered to Pugoda Magistrate and Additional District Judge Nilupuli Lankapura, through a motion submitted by his lawyer Piyasena Kariyapperuma. The Magistrate and Additional District Judge recalled the warrant and released MP Ranatunga on his previous bail conditions and ordered him to appear in court on February 26 next year.

Sergeant Shantha Lal and constable Lakshantha of the Kiridiwela police appeared for the prosecution and Attorney’s Piyasena Kariyapperuma, Sanjaya Ranatunge, Thushara Wijesinghe and Kamal Sammandappeuma appeared for Ranatunga.

Deputy Minister Dilip Wijesekara, Parliamentarian Prasanna Ranatunga, and former Chairman of the Domple Pradesheeya Sabha Milan Jayatilleke are among the 22 respondents in the case.
