Rains to continue

Meteorology Department Duty Forecaster Anusha Warnasuriya told Daily News yesterday that the showery weather condition prevailing in the south-western part and the Eastern Province is expected to continue during next few days. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

Several spells of showers may occur in the North-western and the Northern Provinces. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Eastern and Uva Provinces in evenings.

Fairly heavy showers can be expected (about 75 mm) at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts. Temporary localised strong winds may occur during thundershowers. The general public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by lightning activity

The prevailing dry weather in most parts of the island will change by mid-October with the beginning of the inter-monsoonal rains, she said.

According to the Duty Forecaster, the country is now experiencing the south-western monsoon which brings rain mostly to the wet zone. With the beginning of the inter-monsoonal period during October and the first half of November, the country will experience rain and thunderstorms.
