Three watchers attached to the Chilaw General Hospital were arrested by Chilaw Police in connection with the death of a patient who visited the hospital for treatment on September 9 night, Headquarters Inspector Vasantha Herath said.
They are alleged to have manhandled a patient who visited the hospital on September 9 night for treatment by dragging and throwing him on to the main road.
The patient was found dead on the road the following morning by neighbours and his body handed over to the hospital.
Although the Chilaw Inquirer into Sudden Deaths had decided to conduct a normal inquest and release the patient's body, Police had intervened to stop the inquest and report the matter to Court.
Chilaw District Judge and Magistrate Heshantha de Mel who inquired into the report ordered Police to apprehend the suspects involved and produce them in Court. They were due to be produced in Court yesterday (September 11).
Chilaw Police is conducting further investigations directed by HQI Vasantha Herath.
