20th Amendment draft not taken up

The draft of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution was not taken up at the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council as scheduled yesterday on the instruction of President Maithripala Sirisena and Governor Marshal Perera.

Chairman of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council Kanchana Jayaratne informed the council that he was verbally instructed by the President not to take up the draft Amendment to the Constitution for discussion as he expects to introduce several amendments to it.

Opposition leader W. Somadasa said that they came to the council with a hope of adopting the 20th amendment to the constitution in the council. “We should adopt this proposed Amendment. If new amendments are brought to it, we can approve them too,” he said. Chairman Kanchana Jayaratne in response, added that the council meeting was held under the instructions of the Governor. The council meeting was adjourned till September 12 by Council Chairman Kanchana Jayaratne.
