Menace of stray dogs and cattle on Vavuniya streets
As we all know, no day dawns without any stunning news of horrendous and fatal accidents which happen more or less daily in every nook and corner of the country. The stray dogs and the herds of cattle are one of the most primary factors for this risky situation. They are an extreme nuisance to the public who move day and night on roads. Remarkably, many of the dogs are not claimed by any house owners.
They not only dirt the roads but also are the significant cause of fatal accidents and maiming. Most seriously, dogs bit the pedestrians and even they run behind the motorists and cyclists, barking furiously, at nights. At the same time, because of the darkness and the dilapidated conditions of the roads, passengers lose the balance of their vehicles and fall down by themselves or are knocked down by other travellers or vehicles, many a time.
On the top of all, herds of cattle pass on roads blocking the whole road which is the most difficult for pedestrians, drivers, motorists and cyclists. Moreover, herds of cattle sleep or rest on the more or less middle of the roads which are not visible in the darkness at nights, sadly, as many of the streets do not have street lights. As a result, the travellers collide with them critically. Some time ago, one of our lecturers also faced such a bitter experience. He had a fall and hurt himself and had broken his arm and suffered for months.
Luckily, his little daughter escaped without any harm, though she had thrown away. Therefore, the cattle owners should cooperate on this issue to save the public and environment from this dire loss. The owners of the cattle should take special care to get rid of this problem.
Adding to, once stray dogs are identified the authority should take necessary formal and firm action without delay. In particular, the Urban Council of Vavuniya and other cities and town affected, must look into this matter seriously and find remedies to overcome such menace no sooner than later.
