Three fined for running illegal distilleries

Three men found guilty of running illegal distilleries and possessing illegal liquor and equipment for brewing hooch, were fined of Rs. 10,000 each by Matara Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Uresha de Silva.

Illicit liquor and utensils seized during the operation were produced in court as case productions. The Magistrate ordered them to be destroyed.

According to excise sleuths, the three accused in the case were residents of Weligama and Denipitiya, in the Matara Excise Division.

On the instructions of Southern Provincial Assistant Commissioner of Excise R. M. P. B. Dharmakeerthi and Matara and Hambantota Excise Regional Superintendent H. W. D. Kulatunga, a group of officals led by Matara Excise Station OIC Chief Excise Inspector Janaka Perera made the detection and prosecuted at the Matara Magistrate’s Court.
