Shaw to give a big hand for Trinity sports

The present vice principal of Trinity College Rev. J.D. Shaw Wilson is all out to give sports a big hand; he is no stranger to Trinity. He taught at Trinity in the 1980s and was a Boarding House Master, cricket coach, and curator of the Asgiriya cricket grounds.

He was known to be a strict disciplinarian. It Wilson who helped the Trinitians to break the 35-year-old hoodoo against St. Anthony’s in 1986 when they won by seven wickets That year the Trinitians were led by T. P. Weerasuriya and the Antonians by Rienzie Perera.

This great win for the Trinitians would not have been possible if not for the coaching of Wilson. He is a sportsman, having captained Royal College, Colombo at cricket, he represented Oxford University and went on to play cricket in Kent and Middlesex counties. He is eminently qualified academically; he was a research student at Oxford University and obtained a master’s degree from the University of London.

In addition, he has obtained a master’s degree from the prestigious Princeton University in the United States. His main aim is to give all the backing for sports, and also to bring back the Asgiriya cricket grounds to its former status.

Rugby coach Saliya helps MAS

Rugby coach Saliya Kumara helped MAS Holding to win the Cup championship at the 47th Mercantile Sevens. Saliya, a former Kandy SC skipper and present assistant coach did a grand job. The champion side was led by Roshan Weeraratne, there were eight Kandy SC players in the squad of 12 and this champion side beat other heavily favored teams.

Last year’s football semis played this year

After a delay of over a year, it was pleasing to watch last year's semi-finals which were not completed being played, due to poor organization, still this year’s AGM has still not been held. A few days back the two semi-finals were played at Bogambara Stadium.

Golden Stars S.C. played a fine run and pass game to beat Sisu SC by 2 goals to 1. Then in the second semi-final HyLine SC beat York SC by 2 goals to nil. Both matches produced good football and it was after nearly one year that an inter-club match was played. The final has been fixed for August 20 at Bogambara Stadium.

Central Province u23 cricket champs

The Central Province under 23 cricket team led by Ron Chandraguptha emerged champions of the Sri Lanka Cricket under 23 inter provincial cricket tournament beating strong Western Province (North) in the final. Nimesh Gunasinghe who scored a solid 80 runs was adjudged man of the final and the others who contributed for success were Lahiru Samarakoon, Nuwanin Fernando, Lakshan Fernando, Ravin Sayer, Wanindu Hasaranga, Mohamed Shiraz and Charith Sudharaka. Saman Jayantha and their provincial coach helped in a big way.

Kingswoodians beat Rajans at football

A football game was played between two rival schools at cricket Kingswood College and Dharmaraja College at Randles Hills where the Kingswoodians scored two goals to pocket the match in their favor. The schoolboys of the two teams gave a fine display of football.

CPCA Division III cricket

In the Kandy District Cricket Association Division 3 Cricket Tournament, 26 teams took part and nearly 50 games were played inside 60 days. Three teams University SC. Prisons SC and Snslot SC, have qualified to play in the provincial tournament against teams from Kegalle and Nuwara Eliya. Winners of this will qualify to play in the Sri Lanka Cricket tournament. Pulasthi Amarasinghe coordinated the Kandy tournament.

Trinity “lion” and “colours”

Some of the top class sportsmen of Trinity College were honored at the end of the second term of the school by the principal Andrew Fowler-Watt on Wednesday. For a Trinitian, one of the greatest achievements is to be a recipient of the Lion which is the highest possible merit award achieved by a student in sports.

Trinity College 1st XI cricket team was adjudged as the best school’s team - Central Province at the 39th Observer-Mobitel schoolboy cricketer of the year 2017 awards.

At cricket the Lion was awarded to Hasitha Boyagoda, a right hand bat and off spinner and to right-hand bat and medium pacer Thisaru Rashmika. In cadetting Praveen Rajapakse, Shaakya Piyaratne and Tharindu Ratnayake, weightlifting Bevishan Wijewickrema. Cricket colors were awarded to CR Vimukthi Nethumal, Thyagharaja Bhanu, Trevon Weerasuriya, Hasintha Jayasuriya, In rugby there were no Lion winners only colours that went to Keshawa Pelangoda, Rashen Bandanayake, Pasan Samarawickrema, Rishane Madena, Hasinu Weliwatte, Shevan Ekanayake, Kanesha Alwis, Waren Weerakoon.

Rewards for Diluksha Dange, Anuk Bogagoda, Aveesha Priyankara, Nathan Yee Chang, in Karate Nadesh Illukkumbura and in Weightlifting Shenal Premaratne.

Trinitians Antonians at Galagedera today

Only two schools from Kandy, Trinity and St. Anthony’s have qualified to play in the pre-quarter finals of the “Singer” cup under 15 division I cricket tournament. The match will take place today at the Galagedera Central matting wicket.

Kandy’s cue players a badly affected

At one time Kandy was only next to Colombo in Billiards and Snooker and has provided national players and officials, today sad to say the sport is under the table.

Thanks to keen cue promoters Mahanuwara YMBA is the only club which keeps the game alive. Kandy YMMA one of the founders of the Billiards and Snooker Association are also not promoting the game, at Kandy Garden Club they play for fun.

Kandy Club has forgotten the game, Kings Cue Club who earned a name through this sport is no more, due to poor promotion. In the good old days Kandy had some top cueist like Marzook Wahid from Mahiyawa who played for Kings Cue Club and represented the country, R. Letchuman who was the Municipal Council double international and Tuan Amidon.

Sir John Tarbet Junior Athletic Championship

All Kandy school boys and girls will field top athletes for the 48th Sir John Tarbet Junior Athletic Championship which will take place at Nawalapitiya today and tomorrow.

All Kandy school junior athletes are in good form and should give their best. This is one of the most looked forward to sporting events in the school’s athletic calendar.

Over 5000 students under the age categories of 12, 13, 14 and 15 representing schools across the country will be seen in action.

Kandy starts rugby training

Defending league rugby champions Kandy S.C. started fitness and ball handling training on Wednesday at their home grounds at Nittawella. The rugby committee headed by Lasantha Wijesuriya are conducting weekly high-performance training. The training part is handled by head coach Sean Wijesinghe and assistant coach Saliya Kumara.

CPRFU request

The Central Province Rugby Football Union as requested by Sri Lanka Rugby has forwarded details of rugby playing clubs and schools together with names of schools in the two districts who have shown interest in rugby.

They are keen to commence training with the provincial development officers under the Rugby Development & Promotion in the Central Province.

The towns are Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Hanguranketha, Dambulla, Ampitiya, Pilimatalawa, Welgama, Naula, Kekirawa, Walapane, Bakamuna, Bowala, Katugastota, Radella, Darawella, Matale. CPRFU has requested for around 500 balls of size 3 for coaching. Rugby grounds is another matter that needs to be addressed and they have found two new venues in St. Anthony’s and Dharmaraja for development.

Currently a mini rugby development program is conducted every Saturday from 8.30 am to 10.30 am at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy by Rasheed’s Kandy Rugby Academy with the CPRFU approval development officers and referees. Around 120 children from all Kandy schools join this training program.

Policeman Gamini Gunatilake is no more

Former Kandy YMCA’s weightlifter Nimal Gamini Gunathilaka is no more. He was attached to the Police and served as a Superintendent.

Representing Kandy YMCA he was the first iron sportsman who brought the first medal to Sri Lanka in weightlifting. It was at the event held in Pakistan in 1982.

He started his iron sport under the coaching of famous S.A. Wijewickrema jnr. at Kandy YMCA and won the national championship for 16 consecutive years from 1972 to 1987. He was also the manager of the Sri Lanka team and helped the iron sport in a big way.

He was one time president of the Kurunegala Weightlifting Association and vice president of Sri Lanka Weightlifting Association. His cremation took place on Friday.
