Thirteen medical faculty undergraduates arrested for allegedly engaged in a Satyagraha campaign at Lipton Circus against the SAITM in violation of a Court order were yesterday ordered to be released on bail by Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.

While ordering the suspects to be released on cash bail of Rs.500,000 each, Additional Magistrate Jeyram Trotsky advised them not to behave in an offensive manner.

The students who were engaged in the Satyagraha by building a temporary shed, were demanding the protection of state education and the abolishing of SAITM.

On Sunday evening, the officers of the Police Riot Control Unit who arrived at Lipton Circus, fired water cannon to disperse the students engaged in the Satyagraha, ignoring the Court Order. Counsel Ravindranath Dabare appeared for the suspects.

Rs 500,000 in cash for cash bail multiplied by 13 persons = Rs 6,500,000 which is about US $42,000. Which destabilizing fund is paying for this? Any guesses anyone? And is the government smart enough to check the source of the money ? Anywhere else the world people coming up with this kind of cash would be questioned as to the source of funds. Even a bank transfer of $2,000 needs to backed up by legitimate source in this day and age of terrorism and money laundering. How does this happen n Sri Lanka's courts?

These thugs should have been put behind bars for 10 years or more so that the other innocent students who were forced to attend this sathyagraha are allowed to carry on their studies. Therefore, the people would like to see these 13 thugs and ask them how SAITEM is going to affect their goal of ecoming a doctor. They should be brough in front of TV cameras and made to give their reasons and at the same time Dr Rajitha Senaratne too should be called and given a chance to explain to the people without any thing being suppressed what the actual situation is so that the people will understand fully how and why these fools are being manupulated by political bankrupt persons. When they entered university SAITEM was there and if they were against SAITEM or any other private institute then they should not have entered Medical College in the first place but given way to a student who wanted to persue his studies but missed due to the lack of 1 or two marks. Also they should be asked why they are not shouting about the KDA medical faculty and give the reasons to the people. WE would like to see Dr Senaratne him self tackle these thugs as he is the best an the most outspoken person I have seen and admire him for his forthrigh statements and uttering the truth.
