Court orders arrest of Naval Officer

Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Lanka Jayaratne yesterday ordered to arrest a Lieutenant Commander of the Navy who was allegedly involved in the abduction 11 Tamil civilians in 2008.

The Magistrate made this order following a request made by the Criminal Investigation Department.

The Magistrate queried the CID as to why the department took a longer time to arrest the suspect. She also sought a report of the suspects to be arrested in connection with this incident.

A vehicle which was taken into custody in connection of this incident was also produced before court yesterday.

The Magistrate called for a report from the Government Analyst in respect of the vehicle .

The CID told court that a naval officer D.M.P Dassanayake will be named as a suspect in this case.

President’s Counsel Anil Silva who appeared for Dassanayake said that his client is scheduled to be sent for a foreign training before being promoted to the next rank and sought court permission to leave the country for training.

Written submission in respect of the Dassanayake’s request is to be made today. The court is to deliver the order in relation to his request today (12)

Five officials of the Sri Lanka Navy who were arrested by the CID in connection with the incident were ordered to be further remanded till July 19.
