Sports and Education Ministries must unite to solve school rugby issues - Dayasiri

Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara expressed his surprise in awarding the school rugby sponsorship to a Rs 40 million bid by the Sri Lanka Schools’ Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA), sidelining a Rs. 85 million bid and emphasized the need to conduct a joint investigation by Sports and Education Ministries into the matter.

The Minister assured that he will officially request for an inquiry through his secretary to the Education Ministry secretary. “This is a serious matter which actually comes under FCID. Moreover Rs.15 million from the said Rs. 40 million is spent for the two Bradby Shield matches, which is a two-school affair. So only the remaining Rs. 25 million will go for the entire school rugby in 2017. I question why they have included the Bradby budget in this sponsorship? There are many reasons and I will investigate into this,” the Minister stated.

“I strongly criticize SLSRFA. Firstly, a person who does not possess the qualifications to be in the SLSRA is working as their secretary. The rules and regulations of the ongoing schools league tournament have not been submitted to the controlling body the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU),” said the Minister.

“We cannot take the responsibility of school rugby if they do not conduct the tournaments according to the international rules. Also we cannot interfere to these school players’ problems. If they do not adopt international rules they have to run it by their own rule that does not come under the umbrella of national and international governing bodies. Even the referee, education ministry and its Rugby Association are liable for this situation.

“A vehicle can run on roads without a license till it gets caught. It is the same with the SLSRFA. There is a big problem and it is due to irresponsible thinking. I believe both Education and Sports ministries have to think about this seriously,” he said.
