Court of Arbitration to iron out national selection problems

Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara has promised the International Olympic Committee that he will be taking steps to establish a Court of Arbitration to solve the problems regarding the selection of players for international events. The Minister agreed to imitate independent policy regarding selection of players by the National Selection Committee and to submit it to Court of Arbitration for final decision.

All national associations should adhere to the directive issued by the Sports Minister in selecting players to the national team. Any player who feels that he or she has been unfairly left out the National Squads can make an appeal to the Sports Minister.

A special discussion was held regarding the Sports and Sports Regulations at the Sports Ministry between Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, Asian Sports Director of International Olympic Committee Haider Pharman, President of National Olympic Committee Hemasiri Fernando and Secretary of National Olympic Committee Maxwell de Silva. The Minister agreed to amend the Sports Act within six months and after that to conduct a National Olympic Committee election.

Before the end of the year Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara is hoping to issue a gazette notification where when handing over nominations any person over 70 years of age will be able to submit their nominations depending on the requirements of the particular associations.

He also hopes to amend the regulation where a person who has served for period of four years as an office-bearer cannot contest and get elected after his term expires. He has done this on the recommendation of several sports bodies and National Olympic Committee.
