Sports Act will be amended: Dayasiri

The Sports Act will be amended to resolve many outstanding issues, Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said in Parliament today.

He made this observation while joining in on the Committee Stage Debate on the Budget proposal for 2017, under the financial heads of Sports Ministry. 

Minister Jayasekara also said that the Diyagama Sports Complex would be handed over to the public after completion of construction within a period of two years. The construction of the track and the swimming pool of the Diyagama Sports complex will be completed at a cost of Rs 500 million.

He also added that Rs 4151 million has been allocated for the development of Sports in the country.

"The Sugathadasa stadium is being renovated after 15 years," Minister Jayasekara said. "The renovations will also be made with sophisticated sound systems at a cost of Rs 660 million to enabling various international events."

He also said that world's largest sports academy will be set up in the country at a land extension of 125 acres. "A sum of Rs 250 million has been allocated to construct artificial tracts in several provinces," Sports Minister said. "Training of the trainers has been a great issue and two institutions would be set up for this purpose after gazette notifications. Foreign trainers would be brought to the country next year.

He also said that thirty five percent of the budgetary allocations for the Sports is allocated for the sport development in North and East.
