Port City Project will not affect fisheries community: Amaraweera

The Port City Project will never hinder the livelihood of the fisheries community. The Port City Project has provided Rs. 500 million to the Fisheries Ministry to cater to the welfare of the fisher folk, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

Addressing a meeting at the Negombo Town Hall, Amarweera said no one could cry halt to the Port City Project because it was a major cross road in the country’s development effort and forward march.

He said, however, certain groups had expressed concern about this project alleging that it would greatly hinder the livelihood of the fisher folk. The Fisheries Ministry raised this issue with the officials, intellectuals, fisher folk and several other parties and all of them had guaranteed that it would not harm the livelihood of a single fishermen in the country, the minister said.

Amaraweera said the funds received from the Port City Project would be utilised to implement an insurance scheme for fishermen and a loan scheme for the benefit of fishermen.

He said the location selected for mining sand needed for the Port City Project too had been changed in response to the operations raised by certain groups which said the original location was full of fish shoals.
