Probe against GL over alleged budgetary allocations issue

The government yesterday decided to launch an investigation against former External Affairs Minister Professor G. L. Peiris for allegedly spending budgetary allocations made to the ministry arbitrarily and without restrictions.

The investigation against him is to be commenced based on complaints received to the President and the Prime Minister over spending of allocations made to the External Affairs Ministry arbitrarily and without restrictions when he was the External Affairs Minister from 2010 to 2015.

An investigation is to be conducted against him on the charges of spending ministry funds for overseas’ visits without following proper the procedure and permission, purchasing air tickets for persons for whom funds of the ministry need not to be spent and spending money for the activities that do not come under diplomatic privileges.

The External Affairs Ministry directed heads of all departments in the ministry to submit details of mass scale expenditure that took place for five years beginning 2010.
