Educating public on condom use should begin with Parliamentarians: Dr.Mahanamahewa

The introduction on the use of condoms which prevents HIV infection should commence with the Parliamentarians, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa said. According to Dr.Mahanamahewa, the number of new HIV infections in Sri Lanka has gone up and it was time to amend the laws related to HIV/AIDS, STD etc.

Dr. Mahanamahewa was addressing a press briefing at Ramada Hotel, Colombo recently in connection with the launching of three books on use of condoms. He pointed out that there is no tax imposed on Thai female sex workers who freely come to Sri Lanka, stay for some time, earn large amounts of money and go back to their country. But, in Sri Lanka, the police arrest innocent poor female sex workers.

“The Vagrant Ordinance, Brothels Ordinance, etc should be amended day and the public should be educated on the condom use. Public places such as train and bus stations etc can be used for this purpose,” he added.
