Tiran Alles, two others granted bail

Former Parliamentarian Tiran Alles and two others were granted bail on strict bail conditions by Colombo High Court today.

The three were held in connection with a Rs. 200 million fraud alleged to have taken place at the RADA in 2006. High Court Judge Kusala Sarojani Weerawardena made the order pursuant to criminal proceedings filed by Attorney General against four accused - former Chairman of RADA Tiran Alles, former North and Eastern Provinces LTTE Financial Head Emil Kanthan, former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of RADA Saliya Wickramasuriya and Dr. Jayantha Dias Samarasinghe.

Tiran Alles, Saliya Wickramasuriya and Dr. Jayantha Dias Samarasinghe were ordered released on a cash bail of Rs. 500,000 and four sureties of Rs. 2.5 million each. The High Court Judge strongly warned the three to adhere to their bail conditions and refrain from interfering with witnesses.

The Court also barred the accused from leaving the country and further asked them to report to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) on the last Sunday of each month. The High Court Judge further observed that bail would be canceled and the accused would be re-remanded until the conclusion of the trial, if they were found breaching bail conditions at at anytime.

Second accused Emil Kanthan was not present in court but was represented by President’s Counsel Shanaka Ranasinghe.
