The Sri Lankan government is initiating an air service agreement with scandinavian countries including Denmark to further strengthen trade and economic activities.

Speaking at the Danish Days Sri Lanka 2016 event, Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Economic Affairs and Trade Additional Secretary Grace Asiriwatham said connectivity plays a vital role for the successful conduct of economic activities between any country and the proposed initiative will take commercial ties particularly with Denmark to the next level.

“Bi-lateral trade between Sri Lanka and Denmark stands between US$ 70 to 90 million and Denmark’s total investments in Sri Lanka is less than US$ 2 million.Tourist arrivals from Denmark has gone up by 20% in 2015.”

The lifting of EU ban on fish exports to the European region this year and the restoration of GSP plus facility next year will give Sri Lanka the required preferential access to massive EU markets, she said adding that Sri Lanka has also received a vast attention as a tourism destination as a staggering growth in tourist arrivals has been registered.

“Major international airlines and hotel chains are entering a vibrant Sri Lankan market. The advantages include the diversity of products and the compactness of the country. Investment opportunities in the tourism sector are considerable.”

The European Chamber of Commerce and Sri Lanka Nordic Business Council will continuously facilitate high level engagement between business to business activities between the both countries and the relevant agencies related to trade promotion, investment facilitation and the connected ministries including the Foreign ministry will complement such a progress, Asiriwatham said.
