A ‘hartal’ – civil disobedience, is currently in force in the Jaffna town.
Universities, schools, banks, shops and several other institutions are closed, in protest of the deaths of two Jaffna University students on Friday (October 21).
Police said the two third-year students at the Arts faculty of the Jaffna University had crashed into a wall, resulting in their deaths, but a postmortem examination found a bullet lodged in the body of one of the students.
Students from the Jaffna University protested outside the District Secretariat Office yesterday, impeding traffic on the main A9 road.
The Inter University Student’s Federation (IUSF) said they would join hands with the Jaffna University students to protest at various universities across the island.
