Malaysian Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship: Gamini does Sri Lanka proud in Malaysia

Sri Lanka’s wheelchair tennis supremo D. M. Gamini clinched another prestigious international title when he won the men’s singles crown at the Malaysian Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship beating a strong Thailand opponent Pee Mee Wittaya in a nerve-wracking straight set final (7/6, 7/6) as the three-day ITF Future Series tournament concluded in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia yesterday.

It was a closely contested final from the beginning with both players striving hard to take the lead. Gamini who is ranked 87th in ITF world rankings received a tough challenge from Pee Wittaya who is ranked 148.

Number two ranked Gamini is the first Sri Lankan wheelchair tennis player to win a championship in Malaysia. He is one of the most experienced wheelchair tennis players in Sri Lanka and has won many international accolades.

Representing Sri Lanka Army, Gamini has won the national singles title twice. He has shown great progress throughout his career. Five Sri Lankan wheelchair tennis players took part in the tournament with Jayendra Wijesekara as the coach. The Lanka contingent is sponsored by Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT).

The team will take wing from Malaysia to Thailand to take part in the Bangkok Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship from October 25 to 27.
