Minister presents National Trade Policy draft to GMOA

International Trade Minister Malik Samarawickrama officially handed over a draft of the National Trade Policy to the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) during the meeting held between them on Monday evening, GMOA Media Spokesman Dr.Samantha Ananda said.

Addressing a press briefing at the GMOA Head Office in Colombo yesterday, Dr. Ananda said the GMOA appreciates the sincere efforts made by Minister Samarawickrama to introduce a National Trade Policy, but, the so called draft was drafted by the same group of persons who stressed to all previous regimes and this regime that a National Trade Policy is not required.

“The GMOA proposed to Minister Malik Samarawickrama for the need to appoint a Presidential Commission to formulate the National Trade Policy by consulting the public and all the other relevant stake holders,” he added.

“The minister agreed with us and assured that he would request President Maithripala Sirisena to take the necessary measures in this regard,” Dr.Ananda said.

“The GMOA rejected the idea of signing another trade agreement without correcting the existing errors which has a negative impact on the country. The groups of persons had named ‘signing another trade agreement without waiting for a correction of the existing errors’ as ‘Early harvest’ which had been vehemently rejected by the GMOA,” he said.

“The Sri Lankan delegation had made grave mistakes when formulating GATS Agreement and still no action has been taken to rectify errors which has a negative bearing on the country,” he added.
