ACRS 2016 begins on a high note

 

The 37th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing, with the joint collaboration of Survey Department of Sri Lanka and Asian Association on Remote Sensing, marked its beginning yesterday morning with an elegant inauguration held in Galadari hotel, Colombo. The conference is hosted in Sri Lanka for the fourth time.

Asian Association on Remote Sensing is an Asian non-governmental organization promoting remote sensing through information exchange, mutual cooperation and international understanding among member countries of Asia-Pacific region.

The conference commenced on October 17th and will continue till October 21 under the theme “Promoting Spatial Data Information for Sustainable Development.”

Six hundred participants including scientists, researchers, students and professionals from and around Asia were present at the occasion. Addressing the gathering, chief guest, Tourism Development Minister, Christian Religious Affairs and Lands John Amaratunga pointed out, the conference will provide an excellent opportunity to explore, learn and share how remote sensing will help us build resilience to current environmental changes and to strengthen our capability to adapt to these impacts and changes.

“Asia is an emerging power house. The Asian countries will have to meet with diverse challenges confronting the journey of sustainable economical development. Remote sensing is one of the Geospatial technology that would greatly help us in these diverse issues and challenges most affectively in greeting our goals of development and welfare of the people.” the minister said.

Chairman of the Local Organization Committee P. M. P. Udayakantha, Surveyor General of Sri Lanka together with Prof. Kohei Cho, General Secretary of AARS welcomed the gathering.

Emeritus Professor Shunji Murai was presented with the Chen Shupeng Award 2016 for his contribution to the ACRS.
